Man lives in a shed high up in the mountains

A Shed in the Wasatch Mountains

Tucked away in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, a forgotten shed has become home for Tom, a hiker and lover of the outdoors. He first came across the small structure during a winter hike near Brighton, a small mountain town known for its snowy landscapes. The shed was clearly abandoned, surrounded by deep drifts of snow and tall evergreens.

Years later, when life forced Tom to find an affordable and remote place to live, he remembered the shed. It wasn’t much to look at when he arrived—damaged by years of harsh winters—but it was still standing. Tom saw potential in the weathered walls and knew it could offer him the shelter he needed.

On the next page you will take a peek inside the living room, fully renovated.

Renovating the Space

Tom quickly got to work making the shed livable. The first step was to install solar panels on the roof to provide power for lighting and heating. He patched the roof and sealed cracks in the walls to keep out the biting wind. Snow piles high during winter, but the shed now stays warm, thanks to his efforts.

He focused his renovations on the living room, cleaning it out and replacing broken furniture with items he found secondhand. A small wood-burning stove now heats the room, and Tom added curtains to the windows to help insulate the space. The result is a cozy and inviting living area.

The rest of the shed, however, still needs work. The bedroom remains in its original state, with an old bedframe and worn walls and wooden floorboards. The kitchen, though functional, is outdated, with rusted fixtures and cupboards that have seen better days. Tom plans to tackle these projects eventually, but for now, he’s happy with the progress he’s made.

Finding Peace in the Mountains

Life in the Wasatch Mountains isn’t easy, especially with the long, snowy winters, but Tom finds peace in the quiet, remote surroundings. The shed, once forgotten, now serves as his sanctuary—a place where he can enjoy the beauty of the snowy peaks and the solitude of the wilderness. With more renovations planned, the shed is an ongoing project and a reflection of Tom’s determination to carve out a life in the mountains.
