It was late at night when Jake noticed that Luna, his cat, hadn’t come inside. He’d been sitting on the couch, scrolling through his phone, when he realized the house was eerily quiet. Luna was usually curled up by his feet, but tonight, she was nowhere to be found.

Anxiety crept in. He grabbed a flashlight and stepped outside, calling her name. “Luna!” he shouted, his voice cutting through the still night air. His eyes scanned the yard, but she was nowhere in sight.

Feeling more anxious by the second, Jake went back inside, his thoughts racing. He had to find her. Then, an idea struck him. He went straight to his computer and pulled up the security camera footage from the yard. Maybe it would give him some answers.

The footage started as expected, showing nothing but the rustling of the trees under the dim light of the security camera. He fast-forwarded, his eyes darting across the screen. Luna appeared, moving along the yard’s edge, her silhouette small against the shadows.

It was hard to spot exactly what was happening on the screen, especially further back in the dark. Jake peered intently at the recording, hoping to catch a sign of Luna.

And then he saw it..

A shape emerged from the darkness. At first, he thought it was another animal—perhaps a stray dog. But as the shape moved closer, Jake’s heart stopped. It wasn’t a dog. It was a coyote, and it was heading straight for Luna.

The coyote’s pace quickened, its eyes locked onto Luna. Jake’s breath caught in his throat. He could see the creature’s hungry focus, the predator’s instinct driving it toward his beloved cat.

Jake’s hands trembled as he watched Luna panic, running toward the porch with the coyote close behind her. His mind screamed for him to do something—anything. But he was powerless as the scene unfolded on his screen.

The footage was grainy, but it was clear enough to see Luna’s desperation. She darted toward the porch, her legs moving as fast as they could, but the coyote was relentless. Each time she tried to escape, the coyote lunged, snapping its jaws and pulling her back.

Jake’s heart broke. Luna was putting up a fight—fighting for her life, her small body no match for the coyote’s strength. Tears blurred his vision as he watched. He wasn’t there. He couldn’t protect her. But then, something shifted. Luna, exhausted but determined, managed to claw her way up the porch. She was out of the coyote’s reach, clinging to the railing, her body trembling from fear and pain. Jake could hardly believe his eyes. She was alive.

Without a second thought, Jake raced outside, his heart pounding. He reached the porch and found Luna, her small paws still gripping the wood, her wide eyes full of terror. He scooped her up gently, feeling her shaky body in his arms, and hurried her inside.

It had been a close call. Luna was battered and scared, but she was safe. Her bravery, her will to survive, had carried her through. Jake held her tight, grateful beyond words that he hadn’t lost her.
