Tony’s 13-year-old daughter Demetra is in the 1st grade of secondary school. She is a good student who always does her homework and never causes trouble at school. Tony was therefore very surprised when he got a call about his daughter from the school. He could hardly believe them when he heard what it was about. He rushed to the school to find out what was going on.

Demetra had been summoned by the school principal for a bizarre reason. She herself was quite ashamed of it and she did not want her father to be called. The school had completely put Demetra on the spot and Tony thought the school’s comments were completely unjustified. In fact, he was very agitated by the school principal’s statements.

Tony is a man of his word with a good job as an investment banker. He won’t let others put him in his place just like that, and he knew that in this case he had to stand up for his daughter. His daughter had done nothing wrong, but was treated as such by the school and Tony found that unacceptable.

Demetra was in the principal’s office and clearly nervous when Tony arrived at the school. She had been summoned because of her clothes, something she really hadn’t seen coming. Usually Demetra does not think long at all about what she wants to wear. After all, she doesn’t really care about clothes. She was in a hurry that morning, so she just grabbed what was on her chair and put it on, not knowing she would be breaking school rules.

Once dressed, Demetra hurried to class. She lives in California, where it’s always hot, so she wore a simple dress with sneakers. Her school doesn’t enforce a uniform and you can wear whatever you want, as long as it’s reasonably modest, so not too revealing. Her blue dress received many compliments from her classmates, but from her teachers, not so much. They were quick to criticize her.

Demetra had never expected that her outfit would lead to a big argument between the school and her father. But that was exactly what happened on that hot summer day. Her comfortable blue dress was the topic of conversation at the school that day and Demetra felt ashamed when a teacher spoke to her about it.

A teacher from Raymond J. Fisher Middle School located in Los Gatos, California, found that there was something wrong with Demetra’s outfit. In fact, he even notified the principal, who in turn called Demetra’s father. But what was wrong with Demetra’s cute blue dress?

Tony initially did not understand what was wrong with his daughter’s outfit. After all, he had never seen her wearing ‘sexy’ clothes. In addition, he had also dropped Demetra off at school that morning and there had been nothing wrong with her outfit. Unless, perhaps, she had brought other clothes and changed at school…

The man said that Demetra’s shorts were too short. While arguing, Tony told his daughter to bend over to prove that the bottoms just covered her bum. Demetra was extremely ashamed, which made Tony all the more angry at the headmaster’s attitude. Tony got the suspicion that the school had another reason for the fuss.

The father therefore also insisted that the principal tell him the real reason why his daughter had been disciplined. After all, there was nothing wrong with her clothes. That was just impossible. But Tony couldn’t imagine what other possible reason the school would have either. He had a suspicion, but if that were the case it would be very bizarre.

Tony couldn’t imagine there were still people who thought this way nowadays. He demanded an explanation and only got angrier when the principal told him the real reason. The school principal said that the violation of the dress code had nothing to do with modesty, but with height. According to him, Demetra’s dress and her shorts did not match the so-called ‘fingertip test’.

The fingertip test is a standard that students at the school must be able to meet. When they keep their arms next to their body, their pants or skirt should not extend above the fingertip. Tony asked Demetra to do the fingertip test so that he could see for himself whether his daughter indeed did not meet this standard.

Embarrassed, Demetra listened to her father and let her arms hang by her side. Her shorts came out just below her fingertips, which meant she had passed the fingertip test. Her pants were not too short at all. Tony thought he’d made his point, but school wasn’t done with his daughter yet.

The principal soon invented another reason why Demetra was wrong. When Tony heard that reason, a switch went off in his head. This was the last straw. This reason had to do with the boys in Demetra’s class. “Hey!” thought Tony. “I’ll make sure to let them know what I think about that.”

Tony thought it would be very strange if the boys were the reason for this whole situation. He thought the school was using this as an excuse, because they actually knew something was wrong with the dress code. The constant changing of the reason why Demetra was wrong made him doubt that, too.

It couldn’t be that his daughter was the only one in the whole school who wore shorts in this hot weather and broke the rules. He wanted to find out if there was more to it and why his daughter was involved.

Why exactly his daughter had to be the victim of this fuss was still a mystery to Tony. Other girls from her class wore the same pants and nobody said anything about it. He had seen these girls in the schoolyard himself. Why had they not been disciplined while Demetra had? It couldn’t be the boys, he thought.

Demetra herself didn’t understand either. She never thought she would be a “distraction for the boys in her class” in this outfit. Tony therefore wanted to put these boys in their proper place. But before he could do that, he was surprised once more by the next comment the principal made.

He said that Demetra could only go back to class if she put leggings on underneath her pants. Event though it was 32 degrees outside. She burst into tears again. It seemed like the whole school was against her. And she didn’t think it was fair that there were no rules about clothing for the boys. They are not allowed to wear a hat in class, but they continuously violated that rule and nobody ever said anything about it.

Tony told this to the principal and also said that he had seen other girls wearing shorts. He had no problem with this, because it was sweltering hot. The fact that guys might get distracted because the girls are wearing shorts is their problem, not the girls’. So he said angrily.

The rules for boys and girls about their clothing were clearly not enforced proportionally. First, the girls were treated differently from the boys, and his daughter was not treated the same as other girls at the school either.

He therefore also asked why Demetra was the only one to be reprimanded and demanded that he be allowed to ask some of Demetra’s girlfriends for their opinion on the dress code. After all, many of them wore the same clothes as his daughter.

That’s how Demetra’s friends got involved in the discussion as well. They agreed with Tony and also thought the school dress code was nonsense. The girls were continuously disadvantaged by the clothing regulations and that had to stop. And since the school didn’t seem to be listening, Tony decided to take further steps and get the media involved.

He told the news site Today and a few other news outlets about his daughter’s incident. He didn’t want to hide the bizarre attitude of the school and wanted to stand up for his daughter, so he said everything there was to say on the news.

He explained how uncomfortable it must have been for his daughter when she summoned to the principal’s office. That the school had criticized her choice of clothing and that she even had to do the fingertip test. He also talked about the school’s excuse that it was the boys in the class and he highlighted the school’s dress code and how inappropriate it was.

Tony had told the school he wouldn’t let it go and this was his way of getting back at them. The dress code had to change and he hoped the school would do something about it after his reports in the media. But would the media attention have changed the school’s mind?
