A couple hid a big secret behind this garage door – until authorities found out about their plan
Would you believe it?
If you don’t have the means of doing something, you have to get creative. That also applies to getting things done in or around your home. Because even if it is your property, you have to comply with the laws and rules of the authorities. This could mean that something very lucrative might get you in big trouble.
Secrets
The couple Reeta Hezallah and Hamdi Alsmari shared a secret. They were both practicing doctors and lived in a traditional city called Enderby which is in Leicestershire county in the middle of England. They live off a busy road in the Blaby district.

Brick house
The couple lives in a large, brick building with two stories. One part of their home is a garage that fits one car. The garage wasn’t out of the ordinary and wouldn’t normally cause any attention. But Herzallah and Alsmari had turned it into something extraordinary. They had done this so well that their space unexpectedly went viral online.

Parking issues
The couple’s house was part of a housing project and was originally built in 2007. At that time, developers had put their heads together and come up with a building condition that said that every property would have space reserved for a car.

Private garage
At the same time, they were told that every house would have a personal garage. This was to prevent too many cars from being parked on the street. In 2015, the Blaby District Council was informed that some residents hadn’t been following these rules.

High fences
The messages sparked an investigation into the residents that were breaking the rules. This is when they discovered that Herzallah and Alsmari had put high fences around the parking spaces. This meant that other cars couldn’t be parked there, and other residents had to find parking elsewhere.

Illegal entranceway
It wasn’t just the fences that took up a lot of room. The couple had also put in an illegal entranceway that lead from their property to the busy highway. The high fences were put in place to hide the fact that they had done something else with the garage.

A living area
The fences weren’t just there for anything. Nobody could know that the couple had turned their garage into a living space… something that the authorities didn’t appreciate. The garage was only meant to be used as a parking space and wasn’t allowed to serve any other purpose. They hadn’t been given any legal authority to do so.

Building permit
The United Kingdom takes laws and rules very seriously. Building permits are no different, and you can get in big trouble if you break the rules.

Conflict over permits
No buildings can be built or constructed that go against the permits and rules of the city. For example, no importunities are permitted. Once it’s been decided that an unplanned building goes against the permits put in place by the city, the city council can push for changes to the law.

Big consequences
The owner of the estate can appeal the decision if they disagree. But there are big consequences if the owner loses. If he or she is unsuccessful, they must obey the authorities’ wishes. In the worst case, charges can be filed.

Changes to their home
The couple, Herzallah and Alsmari, had presented a plan to the city council in July of 2016. In doing so, they had hoped to get the opportunity to keep the changes they had made. But the authorities didn’t agree, and the request was denied.

Denied again
In February of 2017, the couple tried again, but this time, to the National Planning Inspector for England and Wales. Unfortunately, this didn’t work out in their favor and they were denied again.

A door and windows
In mid 2017, the couple did what was asked of them and took down the illegal fencing. After a follow-up inspection, the officials made an interesting discovery. A large door had been placed in front of the garage. The officials were even more surprised when they noticed that there was a smaller door with two small windows behind it.

A secret house
The garage that was still being used as a living space, had been completely transformed. The officials believed that an employee of the doctors was living in the renovated garage. Because the couple still wasn’t abiding by the rules, in 2017, the officials began numerous legal processes against Herzallah and Alsmari.

Violation of planning regulations
Councilwoman Sheila Scott, who is responsible for planning and housing strategy for the Blaby District Council, took on the issue. In a press release published in early February 2018, Scott said, “The message in this case is clear. If you break planning regulations and ignore us, we will not just leave.” Those are clear words.
