Retired police dog makes an interesting discovery with the help of its owner
He never expected this…
The owner of a retired police dog named Kyle noticed one day that something was making his pet extraordinarily nervous and curious. The dog put his nose to the ground and his ears straight up. It was in Kyle’s nature to be curious, but his owner had never seen him so fixated on something as in that moment. It appeared as though he had noticed something unexpected around him. He stood as still as stone and seemed to be on high alert.
The owner, Mr. Smith, sprang into action to help his dog find whatever had caught his attention. This probably wasn’t going to be easy. Mr. Smith felt a wave of discomfort run through his body. It was right in front of him, but he couldn’t fully comprehend what he, and Kyle, were looking at. It was something you’d have to see to believe.
Old tricks
Mr. Smith started his usual walk with Kyle just as all the other adventures he had with his beloved German Shepherd. But Kyle immediately started acting strange, as if a certain smell had caught his attention. The former police dog seemed restless and determined to follow the scent. Smith figured that the dog was just acting up. All his years of training had instilled a need in Kyle to trace scents.
But Kyle seemed so obsessed with whatever it was that Smith started to get worried. Kyle had lived with two other families before settling in with Smith. This was due to Kyle’s busy schedule that didn’t allow him to stay long. It looked as though the retired police dog was nearly done with his work as a detective.
Sensitive tracking nose
Kyle was an extraordinarily good sniffer dog that was put to work to find evidence. He was a master at finding evidence that was crucial to cases. That kind of training isn’t something a dog can forget that easily. Despite his strict upbringing, Kyle was a kind and loving dog. He was also very protective, not only of his partners, but of the Smiths as well.
Kyle had been trained by an agent named John. The dog was taught how to protect himself and even attack if necessary. Even sniffer dogs need to know how to take down suspects. Kyle was all too eager to put himself in the line of fire for John. With his human partner at his side, he worked hard at becoming a textbook example of a K-9-unit member.
One owner
In most cases, police dogs work with multiple agents. This isn’t an issue for most dogs, but Kyle only really listened to John. John was his true master and the two created a special friendship. John took Kyle into his family so they could always work together. This team was a force to be reckoned with.
However, Kyle couldn’t follow John around everywhere and all partnerships have to end at some point. As much as he wanted to keep his furry friend, John just didn’t have time with his job. John had no other choice but to put Kyle up for adoption. With pain in his heart, John gave the German Shepherd to the Smith family.
New home
Despite everything, Kyle quickly found his place in his new family. They created a close bond during their several walks together. The family lived in a hilly, forested area – perfect for a dog like Kyle. At the same time, the Smiths started getting a lot more exercise thanks to all the intense outings.
But Kyle was having the time of his out in the woods. He chased after wild animals and claimed the forest as his new kingdom. But something was waiting behind all the forest greenery that would turn Kyle’s carefree life into a serious investigation. The free-spirited dog jumped back into his life as a serious sniffer dog when he discovered a new case among the bushes.
The serious twist
The Smiths started their day as any other: with a long and relaxing walk with Kyle. Soon after they had reached a nearby woods, they let Kyle run free. While they were making their normal rounds, Kyle suddenly sprinted in another direction. The dog barked towards his owners as if he wanted them to follow him. That was the moment that it became clear to the Smiths that something was wrong.
Kyle had gotten used to his new life far away from the big busy city. He had much more freedom here. The walks were definitely were definitely the best part. He seemed to have had left behind the stress of his detective work… until he discovered an alarming smell. In the blink of an eye, the carefree Kyle was back to being as serious as he used to be.
What’s wrong boy?
It looked like Kyle had gone straight back to his role as a police dog: he put his snout on the ground and started following a scent that only he could detect. The Smiths did their best to try to convince him to get back on their normal route, but Kyle couldn’t be deterred. He stayed fixated on the scent despite all his years of being trained to listen.
Everyone who has ever had a dog knows just how curious they can get during walks. They’re constantly sniffing the ground to get to know the area they’re in better. Kyle was no different. He discovered everything possible during his walks with the Smiths. The dog went after everything and even made some strange finds, like clothes that had been thrown away.
Uneasy quest
Kyle always got overly excited once he found traces, but this time was different. The innocent excitedness they saw in him when he spotted a squirrel, or an item of clothing was gone. Whatever he was searching for this time was getting him riled up in a way that the Smiths had never seen before. They didn’t have any choice but to follow behind him.
What was causing their new pet to act so oddly? Maybe there was a strange animal amongst the greenery. Dogs can get pretty stressed out by another animal getting too close. The Smiths searched through the forest but couldn’t find anything. It was still unclear as to what was making Kyle get so riled up.
Worries for the Smiths
It seemed, however, as if something dangerous was lurking in the Smiths vicinity, something they had never noticed before. They started to become just as antsy as Kyle when they thought about what the dog might find. If it was enough to upset an experienced police dog it must be something bad.
The Smiths, being the average civilians they are, weren’t prepared for something like that. The only thing they could do was follow behind their dog to get him back. Kyle kept ignoring them until he suddenly froze and threw himself on the ground. The Smiths became hopeless, so they called John to ask him what they needed to do. John was incredibly calming and reassuring, saying that Kyle knew what he was doing.
John reassured the couple and explained that Kyle knew exactly what he was doing. He assured them that Kyle could stand up to any kind of danger. This is what he trained for his whole life. John suggested the Smiths take a look at the tree Kyle had pointed out as a target. John urged them to be extremely careful.
The Smiths wondered if maybe there were drugs hidden in the tree. Once they got to the tree, Kyle started to bark uncontrollably. Mr. Smith cautiously walked up to the suspicious spot. He reached the tree and pulled back a piece of bark which created a deep hole. He looked inside the hole and immediately pulled back in terror.
Backup is on the way
As Mr. Smith withdrew from the tree, Kyle stayed fixated on the scene with intense focus. He seemed to be waiting for his next instruction. But the Smiths had no idea how to handle the situation. This was above them. They needed the help of real experts, people who knew Kyle very well.
Mr. Smith decided to call John once more. With his voice shaking, he told John what they had discovered in the old oak. John immediately sent in a police forensics team and told Smith that he and his family needed to get back immediately. Backup was on its way.
It hurt their hearts and took a lot of energy, but they finally got their dog away from the tree. Kyle looked surprised that his owner didn’t want to do more research but was excited by the fact that the Smiths had gone this far into the forest with him. But the Smiths just wanted to get home to the safety of their home as quickly as possible.
While the Smiths headed home, John rushed out of the police office to get to the countryside. Sitting in the car, he thought about how hard it had been to say goodbye to Kyle. He felt guilty that he hadn’t had enough time to visit his old friend. After a lengthy delay, John pulled up to the Smiths driveway. The feeling of regret was suddenly too hard to ignore.
Painful reunion
John became ashamed of himself while driving down the Smiths’ driveway. He had left his old partner and best friend behind. The memories of their time together were suddenly coming back. It would, of course, be amazing to see Kyle again, but would the dog feel the same? John didn’t dare say it.
Just when John started to have real doubts, he looked up and saw Kyle sprinting towards his car. John wrapped his arms around his old friend and a weight was immediately taken off his shoulders. But then remembered: there was no time for this, they needed to get to work. The duo immediately headed for the trail with the old oak tree to find the nasty surprise.
Terrible find
Kyle and John arrived at the tree. The agent pulled the loose bark back a bit further to get a better look at what was hidden inside the tree. Then he saw it. John’s heartbeat sped up. Even after all these years he was still shocked by finds like this. It was even worse than Mr. Smith had told.
Somehow someone had managed to put an entire human skeleton in the tree. It was only thanks to Kyle’s training and amazing senses that the remains had even been found. The skeleton was hidden so well that the entire tree would need to be cut down before they could even begin researching. The Smiths never could have imagined that their new pet would come across such terrible things.
Serious business
After all the drama, Kyle seemed to find his true self again. It looked as though the retired K-9 was back in his element because of the case. He was back where he was meant to be. Mr. Smith also couldn’t help but notice just how close the bond between Kyle and his old boss John was. Kyle’s mood swing was a mystery to Smith. What was going on?
In the meantime, John had decided that the case was too big for him and his forensic team to take on. He decided to call his chief to ask for help. Just as he was putting the phone up to his ear, one member of his forensic team stopped him. John shouldn’t react so hastily; this was a sensitive and serious case that shouldn’t be picked up on by the media.
