When you get a present, you probably rip off the wrapping paper as quickly as possible to see what’s inside. That wasn’t the case for Adrian Pearce, who left a Christmas present from his childhood love unopened for years. But what he found when he finally opened it would change his life for good.
In his teenage years, Adrian Pearce was dating Vicki Allen. Following tradition, the two always gave each other presents around Christmas, even when their relationship was on the rocks. Adrian decided not to open one of the presents he got, but still put it under the Christmas tree every year. But why did he leave it unopened all those years?

The Canadian Adrian and Vicki met each other at their high school, the George S. Henry Secondary School in Toronto. The two fell hard for each other and were each other’s first loves. But that didn’t mean their relationship wasn’t serious. Adrian could already see a future with Vicki.

Adrian was seventeen at the time and Vicky, two years younger than her boyfriend, was fifteen. While Adrian was wildly in love, Vicki wasn’t so sure she had found the one. They both had different ideas in mind. Adrian was looking forward to a fun Christmas vacation and a beautiful future with his girl. Vicki couldn’t keep her doubts in much longer.

While Adrian had no idea what was coming, he was looking hard for the perfect Christmas gift for his girlfriend. It was the winter of ’71 and he was ecstatic about the idea of spending the holidays with his true love, Vicki, and bringing in the new year of 1972 with her. Adrian’s world was turned upside down right before the Christmas vacation when Vicki called him to let him know she was ending things.

The breakup came as a complete surprise to Adrian. He wasn’t just surprised, he was devastated. He thought he had a whole life with Vicki ahead of him, but that dream quickly came to an end. Adrian’s new year would begin with a broken heart. Right before Christmas she contacted him: she still had a present to give to Adrian, who was now her ex.

Vicki had already bought a Christmas present for Adrian and despite all that had happened, wanted to give it to him. Adrian took the present and decided to put it under the tree with the other gifts. He wasn’t going to open it until Christmas – that was his plan, anyway. Or did he secretly know that he would keep it unopened for 47 years?

In any case, Adrian decided to not open the gift on December 25th of 1971. His sorrow was too strong, and his heartbreak raged on after being dumped by the love of his life just before the holidays. No matter how curious he may have been to see what was beneath the shiny, dark blue wrapping paper, he swore in that moment to never open the present from his ex.

A year later, Adrian still hadn’t forgotten Vicki. His first girlfriend still had a special place in his heart. He decided to put the unopened gift she had given him back under the tree in 1972. And the year after again, and the year after that too… Adrian made it a tradition to put the mysterious gift under the tree each year. And every year it was the only present that remained unopened.

Putting a gift from your ex under the tree each year – it’s an… odd tradition to say the least. But for Adrian it was a part of the Christmas tradition along with the trees, Christmas dinners and Christmas music and couldn’t be left out of the holidays. Adrian stayed strong throughout the years and fought the urge to open the gift Vicki had given him as a goodbye present. “I told my family I would never open the gift” he remembered.

While Adrian could never forget Vicki because of this concrete memory, he found love again a few years later. He fell madly in love with Janet, whose feelings were reciprocated. Adrian and Janet got engaged, married, and then had kids together. But every time Adrian celebrated Christmas with his family, he placed Vicki’s gift under the tree.
