Woman pays for a stranger’s groceries and makes a shocking discovering about his identity

Imagine it was you! 

What would you do if you were in line at the grocery store and the person in front of you couldn’t pay for his or her groceries? The retired Ruth Reed knew what she had to do. She decided to pay for the man’s groceries. What she didn’t know, however, was who the man was. 

We live in a society where looking up at others is becoming rarer and rarer. And that’s a shame because the world would be a much better place if we did. In that sense, we could all learn a lesson from Ruth Reed and her open heart. 

It was just an average day for Ruth when she went to her local grocery store to do some shopping. She had no clue that her kindness would turn her day around completely. 

Ruth is a normal woman who used to work as a teacher but is now retired. She lives in Medford, New Jersey in the United States together with her husband. At the time, she had made one new year’s resolution: paying for someone’s groceries at her supermarket, Wawa, because this made her feel good. But she didn’t expect to become a local celebrity by doing so. 

Wawa is an American chain with numerous grocery stores and gas stations on the east coast of the US like in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, Florida, and also where Ruth lives in the state of New Jersey. 

The Wawa is a very average grocery store, so Ruth never expected something this extraordinary to happen. 

Ruth did her groceries and got everything she needed. She wanted to pay at the register but had to wait a bit because there was someone ahead of her in line. 

Ruth stood in line with patience until she realized that something was wrong. 

The man in front of her seemed to have trouble paying. She didn’t know what the exact situation was, but she knew she wanted to help him out. 

The man didn’t have many groceries and Ruth didn’t like the idea of him having to leave emptyhanded. 

The man had trouble paying for the small amount. Ruth assumed that his credit card just wasn’t accepted at this particular store. Some stores don’t accept all credit cards. 

What he was buying wasn’t expensive. Just five euros. So, Ruth decided to pay for it herself. She still had no idea who she had done the good deed for. All she was thinking about was the resolution she had made. 

Ruth talked about the resolution she made in an interview with CBS Philly. Her and her husband mostly wanted to show their appreciation for soldiers if they ever crossed paths in the grocery store. “Paying for them at Wawa or Dunkin Donuts,” she said. But paying for someone else completely wasn’t something she had ever dreamt of doing. 

When Ruth looked at the man, his appearance did ring a bell. “He looked familiar”, she remembers from that moment.

The story gets even crazier when she found out it happened to be a famous country singer. “But why would he be here? In Melford?” she still wondered.
