The horror story of Black Friday

For many people, Black Friday is a popular day on which customers can save money on some really good deals. Especially in current times, where everything is getting more expensive, it seems like the perfect day to buy your holiday presents. Black Friday takes place on the day after Thanksgiving but many retailers already open up the afternoon of Thanksgiving. On that day big crowds of people are waiting in line outside of the store to find some really good deals. So did Ruth, this kind-hearted woman was determined to buy a present for her grandson on this day. Except for her, this happy day turned into the most horrible day of her life…

Perfect grandparents

With her kind eyes, caring soul and warm heart, Ruth was a perfect grandmother for her grandson. The moment her daughter announced that she got pregnant, Ruth already knew she would fall in love with her grandchild.

And she did. Ruth and her husband spoiled him with their love and attention. Every Wednesday it was grandparents’ day and they threw big sleepovers together where they spoiled their grandson even more. Ruth felt like the happiest woman on earth. Until everything changed.

Her worst nightmare

Her husband always had weak health, but one day it got really bad. Within a few days, Ruth saw him deteriorate until he was too weak to even get out of bed. The only thing he did was sleep and at the insistence of Ruth, eat a little bit. Ruth cherished these little moments she had with him because she knew it could be over very soon. And she was right because the day she feared so much, had arrived. Her husband passed away.

Ruth felt terrible, she felt like someone took away a part of her. She spent her days looking at old pictures of him when he was still there and she felt sick to her stomach. She couldn’t even eat anymore and Ruth started to lose weight fast. The mornings were the hardest because she often caught herself dreaming of him at night. Then when she woke up she would feel bad because reality kicked in and she realized that she was all alone now. She started to feel worse and worse. But then, at the moment she thought she couldn’t live with it anymore, something changed…

A little ray of sunshine

She always said to everyone that her grandson was like a little ray of sunshine. So when he asked her that one question it was yet another confirmation for her that this was true. With a sweet smile on his face, he stood at her doorstep and asked if they could throw another sleepover. “Just like the old days”, he said. When her grandson Dave suggested this, Ruth’s heart melted. Even though he was already 17 now, and the time of sleepovers was long gone for him, he wanted to cheer up his grandma with this adorable gesture.

So that’s what they did, they threw the best sleepover ever and it felt like the old days again. After that moment, Ruth immediately felt better and her bond with her grandson became even better than before. He visited her almost every day and they became inseparable. He really was her rock and the light in her day. So when the following thing happened it broke her heart.

All by herself

One morning they announced the news. Her daughter, son-in-law, and her grandson all turned up at her house. At first, she thought they were paying her a casual visit, but then they told her the terrible news.

Ruth’s son-in-law got a new job in a city more than 300 kilometers away. So that meant the whole family had to move, including her beloved grandson. She felt so terrible because she would miss her grandson so much. She would miss them all but not getting to see her grandson on a regular basis anymore was the hardest part. Because they saw each other so much it would, again, feel like a big hole in her life. Ruth felt terribly alone. From that moment on she spends the majority of her time all by herself. And even though she tried so hard to remain positive, some days were just lonely. But then one day the doorbell rang and when she opened the door she couldn’t believe what she just saw.

The best gift ever

The moment Ruth opened the door her eyes lit up immediately. In front of the door, she saw her grandson Dave standing there with a big smile on his face. In his arms, he was holding the most adorable creature she has ever seen. It was only when he explained it to her a few minutes later, that she realized he bought the dog for her. It was a gift so she would feel less lonely when he was not around. And Dave was right, this was the best idea ever!

After that moment Ruth was so happy again and she took the dog everywhere. Because the dog brought her so much joy she called him ‘Happy’. She felt so grateful and at the same time, she felt sad. That’s because she wanted to do something back for Dave but she didn’t have anything worth giving to him, because after her husband died she didn’t have much spare money.

Saving money 

Ruth started putting aside her savings because she suddenly had a brilliant idea of how to thank her grandson on Christmas with the most amazing present. While she was grocery shopping, she overheard a conversation about these big sales during Black Friday. And because Ruth didn’t have much money, she decided to go shopping herself during Black Friday. Then she could finally afford the big present her grandson deserved. 

On his last visit, Dave told her he was saving up some money to buy a Playstation. All his friends already had one and Dave wanted nothing more than to be able to participate. Ruth knew that Dave still had a long way to go so she wanted to surprise him by giving him this as a present on Christmas eve. But a PlayStation is expensive and unfortunately, Ruth didn’t have that much money anymore. That’s why she wrote Black Friday with big letters on her agenda. Little did she know, this would turn out into a horrible disaster…

Important day

On the fourth Friday in November, it was finally happening. Ruth had set her alarm early because she wanted to be first in line to enter the store. She was already getting excited and was thinking about the reaction her grandson would give when he saw the present.

Ruth took a big bag with her in which she could store the PlayStation. She also took her dog Happy with her. Because at the end of the day, he was the reason that she was doing this. Happy was happily wagging his tail when they left the house. If only he had known what awaited him…

Shocked

When they entered the store, Ruth was shocked by what she saw. She had expected that there would be a number of people in front of the store and that she might have to wait a few minutes, but she had not expected this.

Before her, she saw a long line of people from the sliding doors of the store to the sidewalk and beyond. For a minute she thought about going home but then she quickly changed her mind. She gave herself a pep talk and kept reminding herself that she did this for her beloved grandson who deserved the world. With that motivational thought, she joined the back of the line.

Appearances can be deceiving

The first 30 minutes in line were fine but after that Ruth soon started to experience some aches and pains. She is of course not the youngest anymore so her body had some physical defects. In addition to the fact that the long standing still started to take a toll on her body, Ruth realized to her great frustration that she had to pee.

Behind her is a mother with two children who had also been waiting there for around the same amount of time as her. “She looks quite friendly and she has children herself so she must be trustworthy”, is what Ruth thought before she asked her the question. The woman answered her in a really friendly way and said she will take good care of her spot and her dog. With a feeling of reassurance, Ruth leaves the line to search for a public toilet. But appearances can be deceiving because, unfortunately for Ruth, her faith in humanity was too good… 

Panic

When Ruth comes back to rejoin her spot in line she can’t find the woman anymore. The line is even longer than before now and Ruth gets disoriented. She starts asking people in line but no one seems to know or care where the woman with her dog is. Everybody is minding their own business and even seems irritated by her. She has to find them themselves then.

With a racing heart and sweaty palms, Ruth tries to scan the line. She walks across the line multiple times but still can’t see her. In a bit of panic, she starts questioning herself if she remembers it correctly. Was it a red or a brown jacket the woman was wearing? And what were the children wearing? Then finally, the moment she almost bursts into a panic attack, she sees her…

On her phone

With big relief she starts walking towards the woman with her child. The last meters she almost runs because she is so happy she finally found her. When Ruth arrives at the woman, something strange happens. The woman doesn’t look at her and pretends she is busy on her phone. ‘Maybe she hasn’t seen me yet, Ruth thinks. Ruth starts to talk to her and thanks her for saving her spot in the line. Then the woman finally looks at her and gives her the coldest look. She says that she doesn’t know what she means and continues to look at her phone.

Ruth is confused and looks at the woman who earlier seemed so friendly. “What do you mean, you don’t know?”, she shouts with a small raise in her voice. But the woman stays consistent and keeps insisting she doesn’t know her. Ruth can’t believe her eyes and tries a few more times to convince the woman to let her go back in line but it doesn’t work. Then Ruth gives up and decides to get her dog and get back in line. While she is already looking for Happy she asks the woman to give her dog back. But what the woman answers next, is something Ruth wouldn’t wish on her worst enemy. 

Teach her a lesson

Ruth looks at the woman in disbelief. Did she really just say that? Ruth still can’t believe it and secretly hopes she has misheard her. “What did you just say?”, she says to the woman.

“I don’t know where your stupid dog is!”, the woman snarls even more irritated. And then when Ruth looks down, Happy is indeed nowhere to be found. Ruth has always been the kind of person to never get mad at anyone or start a fight, but at this moment she is so close. She would love to teach the woman a lesson but she also knows that she wouldn’t stand a chance at her age. And more importantly, she has to find Happy first. 

Crazy crying woman

Ruth starts looking everywhere but the panic kicks in. The crowd is getting bigger and bigger now and Happy could be anywhere. Or maybe someone even took him. Ruth would never be able to forgive herself if something like that happened. With the thought of losing him, a little tear flows down her cheek. Ruth is done playing it cool now and hysterically starts shouting his name. “HAPPY!” she screams, as she scans the crowd looking for her dog.

When she sees all their heads suddenly looking her way, she realizes it must be a funny sight for the crowd. “They must think I’m crazy.” she thinks, “An old woman who is screaming ‘happy’ while crying.”. But at the same time, she doesn’t care at all and she is past all shame. All that matters is finding her dog and with that in mind, she screams his name even louder. She screams his name until her throat gets sore and all it produces is a shrill squeaking sound. But Ruth doesn’t give up and she continues to scream until suddenly she hears a soft bark.

Feet everywhere

Her heart starts beating faster, Ruth is so relieved, she finally heard him. Ruth follows the sound of the barking and pushes herself through an angry crowd. She looks down but everywhere she sees feet and people clinging to each other to make sure no one steals their spot in line. But then behind the ankles of a group of tall men, she suddenly sees his soft little paws. Hidden among all the people, he looks scared and vulnerable.

When Ruth picks him up, she realizes she’s never been so scared in her life. With Happy in her arms, she rushes out of the crowd and starts crying tears of relief. Ruth is so grateful to have him back and she is about to go home because Happy is worth much more to her than this. She puts Happy on the ground and walks with him toward the street. But then Happy does something she can’t believe.
