10 things all ‘60s kids remember

We’re feeling extra nostalgic today, after being reminded of these special memories.

It’s been a long time, but we haven’t forgotten these special things from the ’60s. From family fun to cinema magic… A lot happened in The Swinging Sixties. We’ll walk you through 10 things all kids that grew up in this decade will remember.

1. Watching the Beatles on TV

Were you one of the millions around the world watching the Beatles perform live on television? With hits like “Here Comes The Sun”, “Let It Be” and “Come Together”, the Beatles are widely regarded as one of the greatest bands of all time. And it all started in the ‘60s!

2. Massive televisions

Speaking of TV… Even though we’re now all used to flatscreens and 4K High Definition Super Aspect Ratio screens, in the ‘60s we all watched our shows on a huge television with a lot of knobs. We’d gather around with the entire family. And when it would malfunction? Dad would give it a good old smack.

3. Barbies

Remember when barbies first came out? The iconic doll is still extremely popular around the world, but she was first introduced in 1959. It wasn’t until the ‘60s before kids around the world got mad about the blonde fashion icon.

4. Troll Dolls

Remember these creepy things? They were all the rage in the ‘60s. We loved to stroke their hair, which according to Life magazine, were ‘strangely soothing to the touch’. They came in all kinds of colors and different editions.

5. Etch-a-Sketch

This was way before iPads were a thing. This magical drawing device became the cure for boredom for every ‘60s kid. It used static charge to move around aluminum powder and plastic beads, something that looked like magic to our young eyes.

6. The Sound of Music

Remember singing along to the Sound of Music? This cultural phenomenon came out in 1965 and soon after that, every kid would know the lyrics to every song. We all secretly hoped to be adapted into the von Trapp family.

7. Making tie-dye

A boring white shirt? A kid from the ‘60s would know what to do. Throw some rubber bands around a scrunched up t-shirt and go wild with the dye! The result was something straight out of a psychedelic band poster.

8. First man on the moon

It was a moment that you’ve probably never forgot. In 1964, Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon. We had finally reached another planet. It was “one small step for man, but one giant leap for mankind”.

9. The amazing special effects in Mary Poppins

Remember the special effects in the Mary Poppins movie? It looked so real to our young eyes. Cartoon characters and real-life actors were interacting in the same shot. Nowadays, you can’t even distinguish computer generated imagery from real life, but back then… It was like magic.

10. Board games

Whether you liked them or not: every family in the ‘60s was all about board games. Remember those wacky games that were so typical of the ‘60s? We’re talking about games like “Don’t spill the beans” and “The Last Straw”!
