The 10 Craziest Airplanes Ever To Exist

When you’re at the airport, chances are you’ll see little variation in the kind of airplanes there. But not every airplane is a Boeing 747 or an Airbus A320. Today, we’ll show you 10 of the craziest airplanes in the world. Number 7 is our personal favorite.

1. A tank with wings
This Russian made airplane, the Kalinin K-7, is more of a tank than a plane, really. The plane was built in 1931 in the Soviet Union, made entirely out of Soviet steel. It was designed by Konstantin Kalinin and housed an enormous machine gun, along with several additional turrets. The plane successfully completed 7 test flights, but unfortunately crashed on its 8th flight. Its development was abandoned in 1935.

2. The Whale Plane
This is the Airbus BelugaXL, a variation of a standard Airbus plane. It has been modified to carry enormous cargo, like airplane parts and military vehicles. It was officially called the Super Transporter, but it quickly gained the nickname Beluga, for its resemblance to the whale. This has since been adopted as its official name.

3. Nuclear-powered sky hotel
This plane looks like it came straight out of the mind of a SciFi author. It’s a nuclear-powered hotel in the sky, which is supposed to hover above the clouds. It can house up to 5000 guests. A lounge in its tail allows you a 360 degree view of your surroundings. Imagine watching the sun rise from above the clouds! For now it’s just a concept, but we might see this come to life in the future!

4. US Military UFO
This VTOL (Vertical TakeOff and Landing) aircraft was developed as part of a highly confidential, secret U.S. military project in the early years of the Cold War. It was called the Avrocar and resembles what most people think a UFO looks like. It was meant to function as a fighter-like aircraft, replacing large, bulky helicopters. Unfortunately, production was cancelled in 1961.

5. Flying boat
This crazy plane, the Dornier Do X, was the largest, heaviest flying boat when it was first produced in 1929. It was built by German engineers and was enormously popular with the public. Unfortunately, they couldn’t quite find a commercial use for it. A lack of commercial interest and a number of accidents (none of them fatal, luckily), no more than three of these were ever built.

6. The biggest plane in the world
This is the Antonov AN-225, which was the biggest plane in the world, until it was destroyed in February 2022. It was nicknamed “Mriya”, which means “Dream” in Ukrainian. The Mriya was 84 meters long and weighed 285,000kg. It was a very popular plane with plane enthousiasts, who would come to watch this giant take off and land.

7. The smallest plane in the world
After showing you the largest plane in the world, of course we also need to show you the smallest. It’s our personal favorite in this list. This is the Starr Bumble Bee II. It’s named after the bumblebee, whose wings look like they’re too small to carry its weight. The same can be said for this aircraft, with its wingspan only measuring 2 meters. It was built in 1988 by engineer Robert Starr, who set out to break the previous record. The plane is highly unstable and crashed in 1988, severely injuring Robert Starr, who has fortunately made a full recovery.

8. Flying jeep
This crazy-looking aircraft is the Curtiss-Wright VZ-7. It’s a so-called “VTOL quad rotor aircraft”, but hey. That’s just gibberish, right? It’s a flying jeep that was designed specifically for the US military. It performed well during tests, but it wasn’t able to mee the standards of the Army, after which it was retired in 1960. There were only two built.

9. The Beetle
This is the SNECMA Coléoptère, which means “beetle” in French. There was only ever one Beetle built. It was meant to take off and land vertically, like a VTOL, so that it wouldn’t require much space. It was seen as a very experimental aircraft, with it having no wings. Unfortunately the sole prototype was destroyed during its ninth flight. Production of a second Beetle was never started.

10. The Aerocycle
A flying platform, the Aerocycle was built for the US Army as a reconnaissance tool. It was first tested at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in 1955. It was designed to fly up to 70 miles per hour and only require 20 minutes of instruction before a soldier could use it. But the platform proved too accident-prone during the initial test flights, and the project was abandoned.
