Skipping Work for a Holiday, Woman Encounters an Unforeseen Surprise on the Plane

Noah had reached her breaking point. Work had been a whirlwind of meetings, deadlines, and endless reports. She was buried under a mountain of emails, and each day felt more suffocating than the last. Her boss, Mr. Green was well-meaning but relentless, piling on more tasks as though Noah had the stamina of a superhero.

That morning, she lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, feeling like she was on the verge of collapse. The tropical vacation she had planned months ago now felt like a distant dream—until an idea sparked in her mind. Desperation gave birth to a plan, one she would normally never consider: she was going to call in sick. Grabbing her phone, Noah took a deep breath. She dialed the office and, after a few rings, Mr. Green’s familiar voice answered.

“Morning, Noah,” he said in his brisk, professional tone. “How are we doing today?” Putting on her best miserable voice, Noah coughed slightly before speaking, “I’m really sorry, Mr. Green. I woke up with a terrible stomach bug. I feel awful… I think I need a few days to recover.” There was a pause on the other end. Noah’s heart pounded in her chest, afraid that he might see right through her lie. But then Mr. Green sighed.

“Don’t worry about it, Noah,” he said, his voice softening with concern. “Take the time you need. Just focus on getting better.” Relief washed over her. She thanked him, hung up, and then threw herself into action. Her bag was already packed—she’d been planning this getaway in secret, booking the flight weeks ago. A spontaneous week of sun, sand, and freedom. She’d return to work rejuvenated, no one the wiser.

At the airport, the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement. Noah checked in, breezed through security, and finally settled into her window seat. She took a deep breath, the weight of her deception fading as the idea of a carefree vacation took hold. Just a few hours and she’d be lying on a beach, sipping cocktails, far away from the chaos of the office. But as the last few passengers boarded, her contentment turned to dread. A man walked onto the plane, his sharp suit standing out among the sea of vacation wear.

At first, Noah didn’t pay him much attention. She was focused on settling in, flipping through the in-flight magazine absentmindedly. But then something caught her eye. The man’s profile—it was so familiar. Too familiar. Dark hair, sharp jawline, and those piercing blue eyes. Noah’s stomach dropped. Her heart nearly stopped as she leaned forward for a better look. Was that… Mr. Green? “No, it can’t be,” she whispered to herself, but the resemblance was uncanny.

Her boss, the very one she’d just lied to about being sick, was here, on this very flight. The same man she’d worked under for years, the same one she had just tricked into giving her time off. Her mind raced. What if he was on the same vacation? What if he already knew she was lying and was here to catch her in the act? She suddenly felt exposed, like a criminal waiting to be caught.

Her palms began to sweat as she ducked behind her magazine, hoping—praying—that he wouldn’t see her.  The man—Mr. Green, or his doppelgänger—walked down the aisle, his eyes scanning the rows. Noah’s heart pounded in her chest, so loudly she was sure everyone around her could hear it. His gaze seemed to linger near her row, and she shrank lower into her seat, using the magazine as a shield. Was he looking for her? Did he already suspect she was faking her illness?

She chanced another glance. He was adjusting his jacket, looking at his phone, glancing around—behaviors that seemed innocent on the surface but now filled Noah with dread. Every little gesture felt like an accusation, like he was piecing together her betrayal right in front of her. The flight attendants announced that the plane was preparing for takeoff, but Noah barely heard them. She was too busy spiraling, her mind consumed by what might happen if Mr. Green found her here. How could she explain herself?

A sudden, miraculous recovery? Nothing sounded remotely plausible. The flight dragged on, each minute feeling like an eternity. Noah barely touched her in-flight meal, too afraid to lift her head, fearing she’d meet Mr. Green’s gaze. The entire time, she was convinced he was watching her, tracking her every move. Finally, the plane began its descent, and for the first time in hours, Noah felt a flicker of relief. Soon, she would be off the plane, and maybe—just maybe—she could slip away without being noticed.

Once they landed, Noah hurried off the plane, staying as inconspicuous as possible. Her only goal was to get through baggage claim without bumping into the man she believed was her boss. She prayed he had checked no bags and would leave the airport quickly. Standing by the conveyor belt, Noah anxiously scanned the crowd. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, startling her out of her thoughts. She glanced down at the screen. “Mr. Green” Her stomach lurched. What terrible timing.

“Noah, how are you doing?” Mr. Green’s voice sounded warm with concern. “I wanted to check in and make sure you’re okay. That stomach bug sounded nasty.” Her mouth went dry. She forced herself to cough a little before responding. “I’m… I’m doing better, just a bit weak still.” She glanced around nervously, scanning the airport to ensure the man wasn’t anywhere near her. That’s when she saw him. The man from the plane, standing just a few feet away, waiting for his bags.

Her heart raced. There he was—but he wasn’t on the phone. He wasn’t even holding his phone. Noah’s eyes widened in disbelief as she looked from her phone to the man and back again. Confusion gripped her until something else caught her eye—his luggage. A sleek tag dangled from his suitcase with the name ‘Daniel Green’. Her mind whirled as she read the small print beneath it: Twin brother of Robert Green. A wave of relief crashed over her, followed by disbelief. Mr. Green had a twin? An identical twin?

She stifled a laugh, ending her call with her boss as gracefully as possible. Her nerves were shot, her mind still spinning. All this time, she’d been terrified of running into her boss, only to realize she had spent hours avoiding his brother. As she grabbed her suitcase and made her way toward the exit, Noah couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. The vacation was already off to a chaotic start, but she’d take it. After all, she wasn’t caught—and she had a week of sun and relaxation ahead of her.
