Elderly Man Has Been Living Inside an Old LightHouse For Decades – But Wait Until You See The Inside!

The initial idea of living in an old lighthouse might seem romantic, high on a cliff with views out over the ocean. However the harsh reality of being exposed to the salty air and constant wind takes a big toll on a building. That’s something that James Fairbank has learned throughout the 35 years he’s been living inside a 19th century lighthouse. Though recently with help from his nephew the lighthouse has seen a dramatic renovation.

You’ll be amazed by it’s surprising interior, James has worked hard to turn the damp and dark building into a light and breathing home. His motivation? He wants the lighthouse to be his legacy now that his time as a resident draws to a close.

Would you be able to live in a place far from the luxuries of a city or village? No stores close by, always at mercy of the unforgiving sea? It takes a resilient kind of character to stand up to the ocean.

On the next page we’ll show you how the building has changed, and we’ve got a feeling you’ll change your mind!

Initially the lighthouse had a lot to wish for, time and the harsh climate had been very rough on both the in and outside of the building. But James could see through the decay and knew that the place had a lot of potential.

The entire renovation took over a year, as the building had to be stripped of pretty much everything before being reconstructed into the lovely home it has become. We are certain that you’d not even recognize that it’s the same building.

Restoring old buildings is not an easy task, which is why there are so many dilapidated buildings all throughout the country. Often these buildings were majestic when first constructed and true jewels of architecture. The loss of these amazing examples of craftsmanship should be a crime!

Are you ready for the big reveal? On the next page we will show you the results of James’ labor.

New cladding, windows and of course a fresh layer of paint has the old lighthouse look like something completely different. Of course James made sure it had still retained the original and recognizable lantern room. Did you know it’s actually still a functioning lighthouse? Although not required James often decides to turn on the light at night.

The building is of course small, and so everything inside has to be functional. Such as this tiny kitchen. Made from local wood by James’ nephew Mark. Its crowning jewel? The cute window looking out over the ocean. With views like this you’ll be wanting to cook every day of the week.

As for James’ favorite place? It’s actually not even inside the lighthouse, James is most proud of the deck attached to the building, on which he can spend his evenings watching the sun sink into the ocean.

Can you imagine yourself living here? We certainly can! James himself hopes to be able to remain living here for some more years, but is also looking forward to the day someone else will be the lighthouse keeper.
