Stubborn Stains In Your Plastic Cutting Board? This Is How To Get Rid Of Them

And that without aggressive detergents

Plastic cutting boards are indispensable in the kitchen. You can use them to spread your sandwiches for lunch or to cut meat and vegetables. However, they can also leave stubborn stains on the cutting board that you can’t get off during your “normal” dish washing routine. Therefore, we share the following tips.

Thorough cleaning

Tomatoes, red peppers or parsley: it can all cause stubborn stains to appear on your cutting board. Fortunately, there are ways to get those stains out. For starters, it’s important to clean the board thoroughly after use. This can be done either by hand and detergent, or in the dishwasher. After that, it is also important that the cutting board dries well. The scratches caused by cutting can leave behind a lot of bacteria – and that’s something you want to avoid!

Multiple cutting boards

To prevent such bacteria, the Nutrition Center recommends using multiple cutting boards. It is best to use a different board for each type of food. Working with different colors can provide an overview. Red for meat, white for bread, green for vegetables, blue for fish and yellow for poultry. This way you know exactly which cutting board is for what, you don’t get them mixed up and you avoid cross contamination. Of course, you can also stick to one board, in which case it is extra important to clean (and dry) it well before you start on the next cutting job.

Baking soda

No matter how well you wash the cutting board, it can happen that the stain is so deep that it takes more to remove it. This is where baking soda comes in. Together with some water and salt you can make an effective remedy that removes discoloration. Make a paste with equal parts of baking soda, water and salt and spread it over the stain. Use a sponge or dish brush to go over the stain, and rinse well. Finally, wash the cutting board by hand or in the dishwasher and voila!

Lemon

Lemon juice can also help against stubborn stains. Especially if you combine it with salt, it is a very effective remedy. Sprinkle the salt on the stain and cut the lemon in half. Take half a lemon and squeeze out the juice over the stain. Let this soak in for about ten minutes. Take the other half of the lemon and rub it over the salt-lemon mixture. Finally, rinse with warm water. Do all of the above tips not work? Then it might be time to replace your cutting board. Good luck!
