With lives as glamorous as people like Beyoncé and Katy Perry are living, it is hard to imagine celebrities also taking time to unwind and participate in something as ordinary as a hobby. It is easy to think that in the life of a famous celeb, everything is just spotlights and glitter. But the stars also have time outside of their work which they spend on doing the things they love. And some of those things are very, very weird. 

Of course, with famous people having a lot more money to spend on their day to day activities, their hobbies might be very different from the ones you and I practice. Some might even be considered creepy. Did you know that some celebrities have some really disturbing collections at home or that many of them possess hidden talents that you never knew about?

Angelina Jolie: A collection of daggers

Whether this unusual hobby led to her ambitions of playing the action hero Lara Croft in Tomb Raider or an on-screen assassin in Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a mystery, but the fact of the matter is: Angelina Jolie has a thing for knives. The Tomb Raider-actress is no stranger to playing with weapons on set but apparently she likes to keep some at home too. 

In an interview with W Magazine she said that her mom is into knives too and Jolie is now passing this interest on to her child Maddox. Jolie talks to her son about knives and teaches him about the benefits of protecting others. We just hope that they don’t use these knives to roleplay ‘Tomb Raider’ together, because Lara Croft is not a great role model for promoting a peaceful household.

You’ll never guess the hobby of the next celebrity. A small hint: it is a lot less dangerous. 

Mike Tyson: Pigeon racing

Another unexpected hobby is the one former boxing champion Mike Tyson started practicing after his retirement. What?! Apparently ‘Iron Mike‘ has his own flock of pigeons that he takes out to beauty pageants and trains for racing. Pigeon racing is not a very well known sport but Tyson is hoping to change all of that. It is said that he spends a lot of time on his birds, meaning he cares for them and trains them for pigeon races.

His love for pigeons started when he was a little kid; he claims that the birds helped him deal with all the bullying he had to endure during his childhood. Currently, Mike Tyson has over a thousand birds in his possession. That bird coop sounds like a complete pain to clean and maintain, but if it keeps ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ calm, then you do you, Mike!

At least pigeons are soft and possibly cuddly. The next celebrity prefers a very different kind of company. A very slimy one…

Paris Hilton: Frog hunts

People who have seen Paris Hilton out and about might be surprised to learn that her hobby requires her to get dirty: the Hilton-heiress likes to catch frogs. In an interview with The Sun she said: “I love frog hunting. I go [frog hunting] at my ranches. I have one near Oakland, California, and another in Nevada, and I own an island. So I catch frogs and put them in a bucket and then let them go.”

What Paris likes about this interesting hobby is a mystery, to us it sounds like a very slippery task. But maybe she hopes the frog will turn into a prince some day? Here’s to hoping… Paris does provide a disclaimer: the frogs are all safely returned to their homes and she makes sure not to hurt them in the process.

Nicole Kidman: Skydiving

Some celebrities think the rush of being famous and living your life in the spotlight just isn’t exciting enough, so they take excitement to the next level. Nicole Kidman is one of these celebs who just need a bigger rush. Her hobby? Nicole Kidman likes to jump out of an airplane. For fun. Honestly, we can’t relate but we are impressed by the fact that she got her official skydiving license, which means she can jump out of an airplane without any supervision. What a badass! 

Nicole Kidman is no stranger to the skies. Hawaii, the United States and Australia; Nicole Kidman has seen them all before the age of five. Maybe that explains the fact that she can’t get enough of sky-diving which she calls “…the closest thing to flying.”

Less adrenaline but just as exciting: The next celebrity has an interesting, old-timey collection. The best part: he shares it with the world!

Tom Hanks: Collection of typewriters

America’s sweetheart just provided you with a reason to love him even more: Tom Hanks revealed that he collects vintage typewriters. He started his collection in 1970 and has since then collected over 250 typewriters. But it doesn’t end there: the Forrest Gump-actor does not just collect the typewriters, he plans on giving them away too. Apparently some fans have already received a typewriter from Hanks with a personal message attached to it.

Just when you thought Tom Hanks couldn’t get more wholesome, he strikes again. We all got a friend in Tom Hanks and we love it!

Some hobbies are fun, impressive or quirky, while others are better off staying secret. Some maybe shouldn’t be practiced at all. One of the hobbies that falls into the last category is the one famous singer Katy Perry took on. The Fireworks-singer revealed that she collects the hair of other celebrities. And she is not keeping it a secret. We know Katy Perry likes to experiment with her own hair and has tried out different ‘dos but the fact that she has been playing with other peoples hair too, seems a little disturbing.

At least she knows that the hobby isn’t the most conventional one. In a Q&A with fans she said: “It is totally creepy, but awesome,” Sure, Katy. We don’t fully understand the awesome part but if you want to carry around locks of your co-celebrities hair, then by all means: keep it to yourself. It definitely won’t make you the most popular kid in class.

A hidden talent indeed: on the James Cordon Hidden Talent Show, Kendall Jenner showcased an interesting skill; the reality-star does bird calls. And apparently she’s really good at it too. Where she got the talent is still unknown, but the Kardashian half-sister can chirp like a canary whenever she wants to.

The usefulness of this particular talent is debatable; it could be a ‘hoot’ at parties or come in handy for tricking the other members of the Kardashian household (“Is that a bird I hear in the living room?”). Still, it is a pretty impressive skill to have and also pretty unique. 

The next hobby is a very unusual collection that completely got out of hand.

Penélope Cruz: Coat hanger collection

Some people collect interesting things: stamps, bottle caps, postcards from various countries, but the collection Penélope Cruz has falls into the category ‘kind of weird’. The Vanilla Sky-actress collects coat hangers! Yes, the things you use to put up your clothes and coats in your closet. Those things. There is not a whole lot of information about the collection and Cruz does not talk about it much, but it is said that her collection consists of over 500(!) hangers; all of them in different shapes and sizes and all of them are created from non-metallic materials. 

The collection might have something to do with her work as a fashion designer but where it originated is unknown. At least it makes for an interesting collection, and she won’t have to worry about where to hang up the 25-piece collection she and her sister Monica designed. Then she’ll still have the meager amount of 475 coathangers left to look at. 

Collecting something as bland as coathangers definitely doesn’t feel glamorous. But the next celeb also proves that famous people are just as ‘normal’ as we are. 

Taylor Swift: DIY Christmas gifts

During Christmas time, the friends and family of famous singer Taylor Swift can expect to get a special home-made present. The Midnights-singer revealed that she is real craftsy and loves to get into Do It Yourself-Christmas presents. The thing she creates? Swift gets out the glitter, some mason jars and turns them into some unique ‘Swifty’ snow globes. Talk about a creative and unique idea!

In an interview with Seventeen she revealed that she got the idea from Pinterest and has been making snow globes ever since. This hobby being as relatable as it is almost makes us forget that Swift has a net worth of $450 million.

Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio making clay sculptures together? Pure perfection if you ask us. Brad Pitt started the new hobby when the pandemic hit just to have something to do. He has a sculpting studio at home and his most frequent guest-artist is Mr. DiCaprio.

It is said that the two of them get together for a ‘guys night’ where they eat sandwiches and make ceramics together. What #friendshipgoals!

Leslie Mann: Unicycling

For some people, riding a regular two-wheeled bike is hard enough. Leslie Mann takes bike-riding to the next level: the Other Woman-actress has been riding a bike with one wheel since she was a little girl. While riding a unicycle in itself is already a challenge, apparently Mann knows how to do tricks on it too. She can ride the unicycle backwards and even jump off the curb. 

She showed off her skills on Ellen and she told O Magazine that riding the unicycle is her best hidden talent. It makes us wonder whether she takes her car to work or just unicycles there. We’re hoping it’s the last one.

Mary Kate Olson: Show jumping

If you think this means that Mary Kate Olson will skip, parade around and do intricate jumps and tumbles in front of an audience, then you’re only partially wrong. The Olson-twin lets her horses do the jumping for her. Show jumping is part of the equestrian sport and is one of the segments that is showcased in the events of English riding. The Full House-star’s hobby is professional horse riding and apparently she’s pretty good at it. But that’s not very surprising seeing that the actress/fashion designer/business woman has been riding horses since the age of six. Just like little Michelle Tanner did.

Andrew Garfield: A man of many talents

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to you that Spider-Man can do a great many things. C’mon; he’s Spider-Man. But Andrew Garfield does not only have a hidden talent, he also has a hidden collection. Not as exciting as being Spider-Man and maybe more of a ‘Peter Parker’-hobby, but Garfield supposedly collects stamps. 

Besides possibly participating in the grandfather of hobbies, Garfield is also good at gymnastics. During Ellen he performed a backflip and rumor has it, he actually wanted to be a gymnast when he was younger. We would say he got pretty close, although he probably would have never guessed that he’d be doing his jumping and tumbling while wearing Spider-Man’s suit. 

We love it when celebrities have geeky hobbies, especially when you wouldn’t expect them to at all. The next celebrity is definitely a surprising match!

Rosario Dawson: Star Trek

With her being a new prominent actress in the Star Wars saga, it might be a little less surprising to learn that Rosario Dawson is a major geek when it comes to tv shows. And not just the kind of ‘low-key-nerd’ that you might expect a big time celebrity to be. Rosario Dawson attends Comic-Con for fun. Her favorite show is Star Trek and she’s been regularly attending the Comic-Con conferences. Whether she goes all out; completely dressed up as her favorite Star Trek character or in her Star Wars costume, is unknown. But we really hope she does. How cool would it be if you attended Comic-Con and Ahsoka herself showed up?

Apparently Dawson also knows how to speak a little bit of Klingon which takes this hobby to the next level of geekdom. We love an unexpected celebrity geek so Rosario Dawson: “Live long, and prosper”, girl.
