1. African Renaissance Monument, Senegal, 49m / 161 ft
This massive monument commemorates the 50th anniversary of Senegal’s independence from France. It is the tallest statue in Africa. It has attracted significant criticism due to how much money it cost. Thousands of people protested against the statue, with riot police deployed to maintain order. It cost $27 million.

2. Statue of Liberty, USA, 46m / 151 ft
The Statue of Liberty is a colossal sculpture found in New York City, in the United States. This copper statue was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States and was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It features the Roman liberty goddess, Libertas. It commemorates the national abolition of slavery and was seen as a symbol of welcome to immigrants arriving by sea.

3. Virgen del Socavón, Bolivia, 45m / 148 ft
This beautiful statue shows the Virgin Mary and her baby Jesus. It sits overlooking the town of Oruro in Bolivia. If you plan on visiting this statue, please note that it is only accessible on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

4. Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue, Mongolia, 40m / 130 ft
This massive statue of Genghis Khan on top of a horse can be found on the bank of the Tuul River, to the east of the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar. This is where he, according to legend, found a golden whip. The statue is symbolically pointed east, towards his birthplace.

5. Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor), Brazil, 30m / 98 ft
This world-famous statue is located in Rio de Janeiro. You have probably seen it before, as it is one of the most famous statues around the world. It was constructed between 1922 and 1931 and overlooks Rio de Janeiro. It has been voted as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

6. Statue of Unity, India, 182m / 597 ft
The largest statue in the world is the Statue of Unity. It is located in the state of Gujarat in India and was constructed between 2013 and 2018. The statue depicts Indian statesman and independence activist Vallabhbhai Patel, who lived from 1875 and 1950. Patel was highly respected for his leadership in uniting 562 princely states of India with a major part of the former British Raj to form the single Union of India.

7. Spring Temple Buddha, China, 128m / 420 ft
The second largest statue in the world is located in China. The Spring Temple Buddha is an enormous statue that was built from 1997 to 2008. When one takes the hill and the pedestal it is placed on into account, it rises a total of 208 meters / 682 ft above the ground. It is made out of copper cast and is dedicated to Vairocana Buddha.

8. Laykyun Sekkya, Myanmar, 116m / 381 ft
The Laykyun Sekkya Buddha is the third-tallest statue in the world. It was constructed between 1996 and 2008. The Layukyun Sekkya Buddha was the tallest statue of the world for a few months, up until the Spring Temple Buddha was constructed. Like the other statues, it’s a popular tourist attraction.

9. Statue of Belief, India, 106m / 348 ft
The fourth largest statue in the world is a massive, red-colored depiction of Shiva, one of the principal deities of Hinduism. God Shiva is said to be the controller of time itself and has the responsibility of carrying out the process of destruction at the end of creation. We hope nobody destroys this monument, because it’s a beauty.

10. Ushiku Diabatsu, Japan, 100m / 330 ft
Ushiku Daibatsu’s construction was completed in 1993. It was the tallest statue in the world from 1993 to 2008. The massive structure has an elevator that takes visitors up 85m / 279 ft to an observation floor. The statue was built to commemorate the birth of Shinran, founder of the Jōdo Shinshū 浄土真宗 or “True Pure Land School” of Buddhism.

11. Sendai Daikonnen, Japan, 100m / 330 ft
Sendai Daikonnen, officially known as Sendai Tendou Byakue Daikonnen is an enormous statue depicting Byakue Kannon, a figure from Buddhist lore. She holds a cintamani gem in her hand. This gem is said to be the Eastern equivalent of the philosopher’s stone.

12. Guishan Guanyin, China, 99m / 325 ft
The Guishan Guanyin of the Thousand Hands and Eyes is an enormous statue in China. It’s found at Miyin Temple, a Chan Buddhist temple. It’s a gilded bronze monument which shows the Bodhisattva Guanyin (the same figure as on the previous page). The county government invested 260 million yuan to complete its construction in 2019, aided by local businesses and religious organizations.

13. The Great Buddha of Thailand, 92m / 302 ft
The Great Buddha of Thailand is one of the most famous statues in the entire world. This huge Buddha was constructed between 1990 and 2008. It is made of concrete and is painted gold. The statue was built using the donated money from faithful Buddhists, which allotted to roughly 104,200,000 baht.

14. Dai Kannon of Kita no Miyako park, Japan, 88m / 289 ft
This statue, which is also known as the Hokkaido Kannon or Byakue Kannon, used to be the tallest statue in the world. It held this record from 1989 to 1991. Planning of the statue started in 1975 and it was finished in 1989. The statue contains over 20 floors with an elevator, with floors containing shrines and places of worship.

15. Mother of All Asia — Tower of Peace, Philippines, 88m / 289 ft
Mother of All Asia is a massive statue in the Philippines. It is the world’s largest statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue was constructed between 2014 and 2021. It was planned to be inaugurated as part of the 500th anniversary of the introduction of Christianity in the Philippines, but unfortunately this had to be stalled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
