This was supposed to be an empty stretch of ocean… But then how do you explain THIS?

Scientists were blown away when they realized what had been recorded

Mankind has always been fascinated by the unknown. In our time on this earth we have managed to solve most of the mysteries that our ancestors were left baffled by. We now know what causes thunder, earthquakes and other natural phenomena.

The more reason for scientists to be completely blown away when they found something on a stretch of ocean that was supposed to be empty…

Discovery

The Japanese Coast Guard was notified of a strange discovery by their weather experts. Their radar showed abnormal activity on a stretch of ocean around 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo. They didn’t know what to think: there was supposed to be nothing there.

They were amazed by what they discovered…

The abnormal activity

They decided to fly out to the coordinates provided by their weather experts. They had no idea what they were going to encounter. The crew speculated on the origins of the abnormal activity: some wondered if this was going to be humanity’s first encounter with extraterrestrial lifeforms, others were afraid they had stumbled upon a confidential military exercise.

They were all wrong, as it would turn out…

Approaching the site

Their helicopter approached the site. It was tough to get to the location, as their view was severely limited by an enormous smoke cloud. Luckily, the helicopter was being flown by an experienced pilot who was able to maneuver them through the limited visibility with little effort.

They discovered the cause of the abnormal activity…

The cause

There it was, right beneath their helicopter. They had managed to find a pocket of clean air in the enormous smoke cloud and finally discovered what had caused the strange activity on their weather experts’ equipment. As it turned out, it was not something extraterrestrial or military. It was something of a completely different nature.

New island

As it turns out: this part of the ocean, which had been empty for millennia, was no longer empty. The scientists couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw an island, with a diameter of approximately 1 kilometer. This was extremely strange. It reminded some of the scientists of the hit television show Lost. How had they not found this island before?

One of the scientists explains on the next page.

Volcano

One of the scientists explains that the island was formed after a submarine volcano erupted in the area. The volcano is located some 50 kilometers south of Iwo Jima. It managed to create a new C-shaped island. Similar islands were created in the area in 1904, 1914 and 1986.

What happened to those islands? Find out on the next page!

Submerged

The three islands created by volcanic activity in the area have all submerged due to erosion by waves and currents. Scientists are doubtful this new island will remain above the waves. If it does, it might be the newest addition to Japan’s oceanic territory.
