16-year-old girl climbs out of window at night and goes missing

This teen’s disappearance shocked the whole community
Skylar Neese was a teenager like any other. Parties, school, friends: her life was full of activities and responsibilities. It was not easy for her, according to a tweet she sent out into the world before going to bed on this particular evening: “Stress will kill me”. She’d just come home from a long shift at Wendy’s and kissed her parents goodnight. They had noticed nothing strange, so the discovery the next day came as a big surprise to them.

Gone
When Skylar didn’t show up for breakfast the next morning, her mother decided to check her bedroom. Much to her surprise, there was no sign of Skylar. Had she sneaked out of her room at night and not returned home? Skylar’s mother called her husband and they started searching for any clue as to where their daughter had gone.
They found nothing and their calls went unanswered, so they decided to report her as a missing person. The only clue the couple had was a short shot taken by their security camera hanging in the yard. The blocky black-and-white footage showed that Skylar had climbed out of the window that night, with her bag hanging over her shoulder.
The footage showed where Skylar was walking to. Read more on the next page!

The car
Skylar had walked over to a car that had been waiting for her beside the yard. The images were of such poor quality that it was unfortunately impossible to read the license plate. Skylar’s parents wondered whom this car could have belonged to, but unfortunately, it didn’t ring a bell right away.
Skylar’s best friend, Rachel, was at summer camp at the time, so she couldn’t be the driver. It turned out not to be Shelia, another good friend of Skylar. Shelia was very concerned when Skylar’s parents told her that her friend was missing and decided to help them in the search.

Shelia
Skylar Neese and Shelia Eddy have been very good friends since childhood. They did everything together and often visited each other’s homes, which luckily both Skylar’s and Shelia’s parents found very pleasant. They attended University High School near Morgantown, West Virginia.
This is where the two girls met their classmate, Rachel Shoaf. The three became friends and although Skylar and Shelia had been inseparable since childhood, they welcomed Rachel with open arms. This is how a very close friendship was born. The three friends went through a lot together. Unfortunately, Rachel wasn’t in their hometown at the moment, leaving Shelia unable to lean on her—something she had done over the years.

Emotional support
The three girls had a very close friendship and were each other’s emotional support. Especially Shelia and Rachel, they were both having a hard time since the parents of both girls were divorced. Skylar’s parents were just as in love as when they first met, providing a very loving home for Skylar. Instead of the other two girls being jealous of this fact, they got a lot of support.
Skylar’s parents were proud of their daughter’s intelligence and ambition. They motivated her to pursue her dreams and encouraged her to be and stay true to herself. This upbringing had made Skylar very strong and independent, allowing her to support her friends when they were struggling.
The friends just had no idea how difficult it would be…
Just like family
“Skylar always thought she could solve their problems. That she could protect and even save them from all the evil in the world,” said Mary Neese, Skylar’s mother. “She was kind of a mother to the two, especially to Shelia. Then she spoke to her about her behavior.”
Although Shelia sometimes did some unacceptable things, she was a very nice girl. She always did crazy things and made a lot of jokes, which always made everyone laugh. Shelia was clearly the funniest of the trio. Mary and David, Skylar’s father, pretty much saw Shelia as their own child. “She just walked in when she came by, she didn’t even have to knock on our door anymore.”

Rachel Shoaf
In addition to Skylar and Shelia, the trio also consisted of Rachel Shoaf. She was the opposite of the funny, rebellious Shelia. Despite being very popular in school, she was extremely insecure. She idolized her extroverted friend. Rachel herself came from a Catholic family and she loved drama: she was also a member of their school’s drama society.
Whether it was because Rachel looked up to Shelia so much, or because they shared a trauma from both their parents’ divorce, the two grew closer. The three girls had a very healthy, good friendship for a while, but in the end a group of friends consisting of three people turned out to bring more problems than they expected.
The friend group started to show cracks…

A bad influence
Skylar’s personality changed a lot over the years. Those around her suspected that the problem lay with her best friend, Shelia. According to other friends, she would have a negative influence on Skylar. When someone confronted Skylar about this, she just waved it off. She was just developing, she would say. She was busy finding herself.
Spending less time with Shelia was not an option, she said. Rachel started to change as well. Her other friends had their doubts about Shelia and therefore asked Rachel to spend less time with her. These discussions backfired: both Rachel and Skylar felt that their friends were acting up, which in fact made them more attached to Shelia and less social with the rest.

High school drama
This did not mean that everything was smooth sailing in the group of friends. On social media you can read that there were quite a few issues. For example, in 2012, Skylar tweeted: “You’re a two-faced b**** and you’re f***ing stupid if you thought I wouldn’t find out.”
This was followed by a tweet in which she wrote: “Unfortunately, my friends also have a life without me”. This sounds like Rachel and Shelia were increasingly hanging out with just the two of them and shutting out Skylar.
Skylar was clearly very hurt…

Fighting
Daniel Hovatter, a classmate of the three girls, remembers that Skylar often argued with Shelia. “During our sophomore year, when Rachel and I were rehearsing for a play, Pride and Prejudice, she suddenly started laughing,” he says. “She had her phone to her ear and let me hear what was happening on the other end of the line.”
Shelia and Skylar were arguing, but Skylar didn’t know that Shelia had invited their third friend into the phone conversation, so she could listen in. That is something you normally only see in movies or read in books, but apparently, this also happens in real life.
Unfortunately, the bullying went much further than this…

Didn’t show up at work
The only clue the police and Skylar’s parents had in their daughter’s disappearance was the blocky footage from the security camera. This showed Skylar climbing out the window and getting into a car. Mary and David Neese became even more concerned for their daughter when she failed to show up for work that night.
This was not like their Skylar, who was known for her sense of responsibility. They had no idea why she hadn’t come home or shown up for work yet. She had next to nothing with her when she climbed out the window, her phone charger, toothbrush, and other important items were all still in place.
Where was Skylar?

Worried
Fortunately, Shelia had more clues. She told Mary and David Neese that she, Rachel, and Skylar had gone on a secret adventure that night. They had gotten high and had been driving around Star City. They then dropped off Skylar at the end of the street so they wouldn’t wake her parents.
From that moment on, Shelia hadn’t seen her best friend again. Mary and David weren’t surprised that their daughter had slipped out of the house, more teenagers do. What made this so strange was the fact that Skylar still hadn’t come home. The parents of the missing girl go through the images from the security camera again. According to Shelia, their daughter was dropped off at the end of the street. It was only a few feet out of range from the security camera, so there must have been more to see.
What they discovered then was very strange…

The story
Shelia had told Mary and David that they had picked Skylar up around 11 p.m. and dropped her off again around midnight. That turned out to be inconsistent with what was seen on the images from the security camera. This showed that Skylar did not leave the house until around half past one in the morning.
Shelia had been intoxicated, of course, so she may have been wrong about the time. Unfortunately, after half-past one, there was no sign of Skylar in the images, no matter how closely the parents looked. Shelia helped to sort through the images. Unfortunately, Rachel couldn’t help, as she had left for a Catholic summer camp the morning of Skylar’s disappearance.
That was quite a coincidence…

Forever
Shelia was very involved in the search. She was constantly looking for new clues and posting calls on social media. She wanted nothing more than to find her best friend. After a few weeks, the police gave up hope. Skylar probably wouldn’t be found alive again. Mary, Dave, and Sheila wept when they heard the news.
“Rest in peace, Skylar, you will ALWAYS be my best friend. I miss you more than you could have ever imagined,” Shelia wrote on her social media profile. David and Mary took care of their daughter’s friend, whom they had always considered their own daughter. When the police wanted to question them, David asked the officers to hold back, as Shelia and Rachel were his daughter’s best friends after all.

Heroin
Something like this can’t happen without any gossip going around about it. At the school of the three girls, there was a rumor that Skylar had died at a party from a heroin overdose. Corporal Ronnie Gaskins, the officer handling the case, tracked down this gossip and took it for granted. He suspected that the other people at the party had panicked and hid the body.
There were few concrete indications, so this gossip received a lot of attention. Jessica Colebank of the Star City Police Department had her doubts about this statement. She decided to focus on Skylar’s friends. What didn’t sit right with her was that both girls’ statements were exactly the same, word for word.
Her gut feeling told her that the story had been rehearsed…
