Lumberjacks find a bizarre creature in a hollow tree

It was yet another tree for them to cut down, but this one stayed with them for the rest of their lives.

A normal working day

One regular weekday, a group of loggers were busy with their work. The chainsaws roared and the trees fell. Their client had set a certain quota that had to be met that day. The team was well on their way to achieving their goal before the workday was officially over.

Suddenly one of the men stopped his chainsaw and started waving his arms wildly. “Stop!” he shouted. “Stop!”. His voice was drowned out by the noise of the machines, but his arm gestures managed to attract attention. Worried, his colleagues stopped what they were doing. Had the man been injured?

A special discovery

The man who had waved his arms said he was busy sawing down a tree, when his chainsaw suddenly started making a very strange noise. Every tree and every day was about the same, so this was quite special. At the time, the woodcutters didn’t know how special their day would become. What they would experience, they would remember forever.

The loggers of Georgia Kraft Co. had stumbled upon a very bizarre discovery. The demands of their client were suddenly a lot less important than this mysterious find. The workers spent the remainder of the day on a very special tree.

What turned out to be hidden in this tree, they could never have predicted…

Loggers

Today, loggers have a bad reputation. With deforestation and other ecological problems receiving a lot of attention, there is little understanding for people who cut down trees day in and day out. In Jasper City, where the bizarre discovery was made, people feel differently.

In this pretty town in Pickens County, Georgia, virtually every family is associated with the logging industry. It provides a lot of employment and is therefore extremely important for the local economy. The town, also known as “The first mountain town”,  is located in a mountainous area, next to mountains like Big Canoe, Bent Tree and the Sharp Mountain Preserve.

This area is full of trees, but none of them like this…

High quality wood

The vast, mountainous areas of wilderness surrounding Jasper City are full of American chestnut trees. These trees are an important source of income for the inhabitants of the town, because of their economic value. The trees grow a lot faster than other hardwood trees like the oak. This results in trees that mature faster so they can be chopped down.

Although a fungal infection in the 20th century threatened to wipe out this tree species, the American chestnut tree has now fully recovered. You can find them in North American regions like Tennessee, Alabama, Nova Scotia, New Hampshire and Georgia. It is a beautiful tree species with many unique characteristics.

But one of these chestnuts turned out to be very special…

The working day in question

This workday in 1980 seemed to be a day like any other. A team of loggers from Kraft Co. left for a wooded area near Jasper City early in the morning to chop wood like any other day. The demand for good quality wood was huge this time of year. The weather was nice and the men were looking forward to their day at work.

Once they arrived on site, the eight woodcutters started their work. The day flew by and soon it was time for lunch. It seemed like a normal day. They had no idea what awaited them. That afternoon, one of the employees would make an incredible discovery that they would all remember for years to come.

The strange chestnut tree

The woodcutters had returned to work after their lunch. They were ahead of schedule. If they kept working at this pace, it would be a short day of work. The men were already fantasizing about how they would spend their evening off, when suddenly something happened that was about to disrupt all these plans. One of the trees that still had to be cut down turned out not to be like the others.

The tree stood out because it was very light in color. It seemed like it was hollow inside. Usually this makes it easier to chop the tree down, so one of the employees got to work excitedly. Until his chainsaw hit something that made it make a very strange noise. When this happened, the man stopped sawing and immediately tried to draw his colleagues’ attention. The men did not yet know what terrible secret they would unravel that day.

A tree like no other

Despite the strange noise, the woodcutters decided to cut the tree down anyway. Once it  was on the ground, they chopped it into smaller pieces so that it would be easier to transport. But then one of the employees of Kraft City Co. saw something he had never seen before. Indeed, the tree turned out to be hollow, as they had suspected. But that was not all there was to it…

The sunlight didn’t shine through the trunk, as you would expect from a hollow tree. This could only mean one thing… Something was hiding in the trunk. What they would discover in that hollow trunk would haunt some of them in their sleep for years to come.

If only they had left the tree alone…

The black hole

The loggers later described it as a black hole. It was impossible to make out what was hidden in the trunk without using extra light. The mystery was very fascinating and the men did not want to wait any longer. They had to find out what had been inside this hollow tree all those years, whatever the cost.

A couple of superstitious loggers decided to remove themselves from the situation. According to a local legend, a monster hibernated in the woods surrounding Jasper City. They didn’t feel like disturbing its hibernation and therefore kept an appropriate distance from the mysterious tree.

They turned out not to be far from the truth…

Only one way to find out

The woodcutters had become so curious about what was hidden in this chestnut tree that they decided not to wait any longer. There was only one thing they could do. One of them had to stick their head in and see what was stuck in the trunk. None of them were eager to do this.

A fierce discussion arose when it seemed that no one felt like taking a look inside the trunk. Surely it wouldn’t be dangerous, but the ghost stories of their superstitious colleagues seemed to have left their mark after all.

Fortunately, one of the loggers eventually volunteered!

Taking a look

The brave logger thought it was taking too long and decided to crawl into the hollow log to solve the mystery once and for all. Time was ticking and they weren’t finished cutting down the trees yet. This mystery had completely diverted their attention.

The logger crawled into the tree and shone a flashlight on what was hidden in the trunk. Suddenly he screamed in terror and jumped out of the tree trunk. His face was pale as snow and he couldn’t speak. He had seen something in the tree that had scared him terribly.

A monster?

Slowly, some color returned to his face. His breathing also calmed down. His colleagues’ prying eyes were all aimed at him. What had he seen? The man was silent. He just stared at the tree, his eyes wide open. It took a while before he could tell what he had seen.

His colleagues were getting very impatient and started shaking him. They wanted to know what he had seen now! When the man finally pulled himself together and he could speak again, he said he had seen a monster. Or a beast. Or a combination of both.

Disbelief

His colleagues didn’t believe him. He must have been messing with them. There must have been a funny-looking piece of wood in the trunk. Another colleague gathered the courage to take a look and he was startled as well. One by one the loggers looked into the trunk and all were shocked and confused afterwards.

When they had all looked into the tree, they turned silent for a while. What were they supposed to say? What now? Of course they couldn’t just continue working. They had never seen anything like it and would never see anything like it again. This day had taken on a very strange turn.

The ‘thing‘

The loggers had just found out that not only scientists and archaeologists make these kinds of discoveries. How had this ‘thing’ ended up in that tree trunk for heaven’s sake? And what were they supposed to do with this? They were aware that they had made a very important find. They would probably never see anything like this again.

The find was extremely frightening and made a big impact on the group for this reason. Several of the loggers were plagued by intense nightmares in the years after the discovery and had to undergo therapy for this. They could never have expected this as they drove to work that morning.

The phone call

The bizarre discovery had a profound impact on that day’s work. They wouldn’t be able to use this tree, so that counted as a loss. But what’s inside was so special that it had to be important and valuable. So they decided to stay focused on the find. The rest of the trees would follow later.

The team called their manager. The discovery was so special that they didn’t quite know how to go on. The manager did not respond the way the loggers had expected at all. Rather than being curious about the unusual discovery, he told his employees to just continue chopping. They had no time for mysteries.
